Los Altos

Los Altos is where a huge share of my LA relocator families land, and they're thriving. Mid-century ranch homes, wide streets, parks everywhere, and schools that families move specifically to reach. It's the neighborhood that makes the LA-to-Long-Beach move feel obviously right.

The vibe

Kids on bikes, garage-sale Saturdays, El Dorado Park a short ride away, and neighbors who wave. It's not trying to be trendy, but like in the most reassuring way possible. Trader Joe's runs and Little League are the social calendar.

Homes and prices in Los Altos

Post-war ranches from the 1950s, many expanded and updated, on lots with actual backyards. Rough 2026 range: $900K to $1.2M. Well-prepped homes near the top school boundaries still attract multiple offers in the first two weekends.

Schools

This is school country: Gant and Prisk elementaries are perennial draws, with Stanford Middle and Millikan High serving much of the area. Boundaries drive real price differences between nearly identical houses, so verify the exact address with LBUSD and with me.

Who thrives here

You'll thrive here if good schools and a real yard top your list. If you're leaving a two-bedroom LA apartment with a toddler, this is the neighborhood that gives you the childhood you were picturing when you decided to move.

Questions people ask about Los Altos

Why do Los Altos homes near certain schools cost more?

School enrollment boundaries create measurable premiums here. Two similar ranches a few blocks apart can differ noticeably in price purely because of which elementary they're zoned for. I map this on every Los Altos search.

Is Los Altos close to the beach?

It's an inland east-side neighborhood, roughly 10 to 15 minutes from the sand by car. You trade walk-to-beach for bigger lots, quieter streets, and the strongest school access in the city.
